What Is A Phobia?

A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder. It can be defined as an irrational fear of an object, place, situation, feeling or animal.

Phobias can lead to overwhelming feelings of fear and dread, causing phobics to avoid certain situations. The symptoms of a phobia, such as as feelings of panic, racing heart, shortness of breath, butterflies in the stomach and nausea can be very distressing.

There are two categories of phobia, the first being specific or simple phobias. These are usually associated with a particular thing or situation such as dogs, flying or visiting the dentist.

The second type of phobia, which are usually more severe, are complex phobias. These include social phobias and agoraphobia and can sometimes be debilitating as they prevent people from carrying out everyday tasks. People struggling with social phobias suffer from strong feelings of anxiety in social situations such as meeting new people or speaking in front of others. Agoraphobia causes people to feel very anxious and upset in situations and places where they might have a panic attack but would be unable to escape from, for example on a train.

How Can Hypnosis Help?

There are a number treatments that are know to helpful in reducing and eliminating phobias. These include standard cognitive behavioural therapy and medication.

The treatment I offer for phobias combines two powerful and effective techniques; hypnosis and systematic desensitisation.

Hypnosis has been used to treat a wide range of issues including anxiety, weight loss, smoking cessation & pain management. Hypnosis is a safe and natural process that helps clients to change the way they think about their problems.

Systematic desensitisation was developed in the 1950’s by a South African psychologist called Joseph Wolpe. It has been used for decades to help thousands of patients across the world. It is know as one of the most effective therapy techniques. It is based on the simple idea that when you are relaxed you can’t be anxious.

Although some mild phobias can be treated in a single session most require multiple sessions.

3 Steps To Reduce Phobias And Fears

Systematic desensitisation has 3 simple steps to help clients deal with their phobias. These steps are enhanced through the use of hypnosis.

  • Create A Hierarchy Of Fears

The first stage is think about what upsets you and give a score to how much it upsets you. For example, if you have a fear of dogs then walking past a dog might score a 10 out of 10, but seeing a dog on television might only score a 5 out of 10. Once you've thought about a range of different scenarios you can put them in order, from the lowest to the highest.
  • Learn To Use More Helpful Strategies

Working with the hypnotherapist, you will learn how to develop more effective coping strategies. These include deep relaxation, helpful self-statements, mindfulness and acceptance of discomfort. Using hypnosis you can experience relaxation quickly and easily and positive hypnotic suggestions can be used to change your thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
  • Relax & Imagine Success

Using the skills you have developed the hypnotherapist will teach you how to enter hypnosis to relax and imagine yourself coping with your phobias successfully. Using the hierarchy of fears, you will start with a moderate situation to imagine and use your relaxation skills to remove all feelings of anxiety. You will only move to a higher rated situation when you have successfully overcome the moderate ones. You will be guided through the whole process and will learn how to create a positive feeling of safety and security.
