We all have habits and most of the time they are benign or even beneficial. A habit can be a fixed way of thinking, behaving, or feeling which is acquired through repetition. In fact, studies show that on average it takes 66 days to develop a new habit.

Habits allow us to do basic tasks without having to think too hard about them. For example tying a tie, cleaning our teeth in the morning, using our mirrors when driving. These things we learn to do, and then repeat so often that they become unconscious processes. Our habits become imprinted in our neural pathways, leading to them becoming automatic behaviours.

However, sometimes we develop habits that aren’t helpful or can be bad for our health or wellbeing. Usually these habits develop as a way of dealing with stressful, anxious or upsetting situations. Habits such as nail biting, hair pulling (Trichotillomania), smoking, skin picking, teeth grinding (Bruxism), alcohol and drug addictions can become a coping strategy to try to deal with life’s challenges.

How Can Hypnosis Help?

Hypnosis has a long history of being used for behavioural change and research shows that it is effective at treating smoking cessation (Lynn & Green, 2000) and weight loss (Kirsch, 1996).

There are a number of approaches that can be used to help to with addictions and habits.  Hypnosis is particularly effective at increasing motivation and resolve to change a behaviour. Hypnosis can help to increase confidence in your skills and abilities to quit and hypnosis is also good at reducing cravings and desires. For some clients aversion therapy can be particularly helpful, creating a strong negative to response to an unwanted habit.

One of the most effective treatments for replacing unwanted habits is called Habit Reversal Training, a simple but evidenced based approach.

What Is Habit Reversal Training?

Habit Reversal Training was developed by Azrin and Nunn in 1973 as a way of helping patients to overcome nervous habits and tics. It has since been shown to be helpful at eliminating a range of habits including hair pulling and skin picking. When combined with hypnosis it is a powerful technique that can be used to help remove a range of habits and addictions.

Habit Reversal Training has 5 components:

  • Awareness Training
    Using hypnosis, I help you to develop a greater awareness about the habit you have developed; when you do it, why you do it, how you feel or what you think before you do it etc.
  • Competing Response Training
    Research into habits shows that rather than try to get rid of a habit it is easier to develop a competing or alternative habit. A new habit that is healthier, safer or more satisfying.
  • Building Motivation
    Hypnosis is the perfect technique to help clients to increase their motivation to succeed. Hypnosis can help clients to build confidence in their abilities and the outcome of the treatment.
  • Relaxation Training
    Relaxation training can help clients to better manage the stress and anxiety that can trigger unwanted habits and addictions.
  • New Skills Training
    Once you’ve developed new and more helpful behaviours you can start to practice these new skills either in hypnosis or in real life.
